LAST September 2, 2021, CineMINT—the official student organization for MINT Film and Video student-filmmakers— held their first career talk with renowned filmmaker, Mikhail Red.
Red’s notable works include “Birdshot” , (Best Film-Asian Future, 29th Tokyo International Film Festival; first Filipino film to be released worldwide in Netflix; and submitted for Best Foreign Film at the 90th Academy Awards) , first Filipino original Netflix film, “Dead Kids”; and horror flick “Eerie” and thriller “Block Z” with Star Cinema.
He shared about his journey in filmmaking— starting from his independent ventures or what he calls “ketchup” films. These films are low-budget, yet he makes sure that the film, although basic in presentation, should have a sound storytelling. He then joined Cinemalaya, the country’s film festival for independent film makers, where he won awards. Through this, he started promoting and pitching his films abroad. Recently, he became the first indie director to launch his film on the global streaming site, Netflix.
Mikhail Red also gave advice to MINT Film students. He told them to always practice their skills in making films, whether in small-scale and develop a sharp sense of storytelling as they also improve on their technical skills. W
