Meridian International (MINT) College, the first educational institution to offer the Music Business Management (MBM) program in the country, officially declared former Warner Music Philippines General Manager, Lachmi Baviera as the new head for the MBM program this November.

The Taguig-based business, arts, and technology school made the announcement this month after the passing of its original program head, Eugene Villaluz last June. Eugene’s pioneering efforts in starting the MBM program at MINT was a major milestone for the music industry and the country.  The MBM program at MINT is the first and only business program of its kind in the Philippines accredited by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).  Eugene was best known as a founding member of the 70’s singing group, The New Minstrels, a theater actor, and former A&R Director for Warner Music Philippines and Viva Entertainment. He was also the winner of the Seoul Song Festival in 1982.

“Eugene pioneered the MBM program here in the Philippines to address the issue of having to travel overseas for a reputable music business college program,” said Hendrik Kiamzon, MINT College’s executive vice president. “The MBM program that Eugene created for MINT provides the opportunity to those students who have keen interest in being a part of the music industry either as an artist or a music business professional. The MBM program charts a path towards a career as a performer, a sound engineer, sound designer, events manager, A&R Director, or any role in the music industry. The program was borne from Eugene’s passion to open doors for aspiring music professionals.”

This school year, Baviera will continue the legacy that Villauz left at MINT College. She brings her professional experience from the music business world to the academe. Previously, she was at the helm of Warner Music Philippines, leading the record label into the digital age by transforming it from a traditional music label into a digital entertainment company.

“We’re confident that Lachmi will be able to continue where Eugene left off. With her experience, and the network that she has, we’re sure that she could create great things and opportunities for our MBM students,” said Kiamzon.

Baviera’s passion for the music industry was also a deciding factor for MINT College’s board of directors. “She has made it her personal mission to uplift the Philippine music scene by providing more and more opportunities for independent artists to showcase their talent to a global market.  MBM students believe in their talented, knowledgeable and experienced mentors, and they are sure to find this in Lachmi,” Kiamzon explained.
